New Furnace Considerations

Before installation begins, you need to choose a new furnace and there are quite a few factors to keep in mind during the selection process. To start with, how much heating capacity do you need? If you choose a furnace that’s too small for your home, you won’t have enough heat on the coldest days of the year. However, if you choose a furnace that’s too big, it will produce too much heat and you’ll have a much higher energy bill.

Another factor to consider is the energy efficiency rating of the furnaces you’re considering. Furnaces today are rated with the AFUE system. This system measures how much of the energy consumed by a furnace gets converted into usable heat. So, if your furnace has an AFUE rating of 85%, it converts 85% of the gas, oil, or electricity it consumes into heat. The lowest rating any furnace on the market has is an AFUE of 80%, which is still very good in its own right.

However, if you want a top of the line furnace, some super–efficient gas models have AFUE ratings of as high as 98%. Keep in mind that the AFUE rating of your furnace will impact not only the installation cost, but the initial cost of the actual furnace. The higher the rating, the higher its upfront costs, but the greater the long–term monthly savings as well.

Furnace Fuel Type

Another important decision is what type of fuel you will use in your furnace. There are three primary fuel types to choose from – gas, oil, and electric.

By far the most energy efficient is gas. Not only do gas furnaces rate higher on the AFUE scale, they generally use less fuel to start with and the fuel cost is lower. However, gas furnaces cost more to install and require frequent maintenance due to the gas hookups. And of course, if you don’t have access to gas in your home, you can’t use a gas furnace.

Oil furnaces are slightly less efficient, but the fuel is less expensive than electricity and the installation process is relatively simple. Finally, there is electricity. Electric furnaces are the least expensive to install and maintain and they can be used in any home that has electricity. However, an electric furnace costs the most to use due to the high cost of electricity.
