How Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps are relatively simple pieces of equipment. In fact, if you have an air conditioning system, essentially you already have a heat pump at work in your home. A heat pump draws warmth from one environment’s air and transfers that warmth to another environment. So, when you use an air conditioner, the heat pump removes the warmth from the inside air and then pumps that air outside, leaving your home at a cool, comfortable temperature.

The same technology is used by your refrigerator and freezer to keep your food cold. The difference with home comfort system heat pumps is that when they’re used in reverse, they can heat your home. A full heat pump system is capable of switching back and forth between heating and cooling modes. So, in the winter, a heat pump will draw hidden warmth from outside air and pump it into your home.

This works in all but the coldest of environments. In fact, as long as the temperature outside stays above freezing, you can heat your entire home solely with a heat pump.

Heat Pump Installation Process

Installing a heat pump is simple if you already have a forced air heating system. Because a heat pump uses the same ductwork as your existing furnace or air conditioner, the only thing that needs to be installed is the heat pump itself. Most heat pumps are placed just outside your home where they can draw air. Like a central air conditioning unit, the heat pump needs to be clear of any debris and cleaned regularly.

That means it should be easily accessible, not just for the technician but for you to change replaceable filters and remove any unwanted dirt or debris that build up nearby. Ductwork may need to be adapted for the heat pump, but most of the time, existing ducts are adequate. If you own a larger home, there are heat pumps designed to accommodate more square footage.

Heat Pump Installation Experts

The heat pump installation process may seem simple, but it’s important to have a professional do it. Not only does a heat pump need to be carefully calibrated, it’s designed to work all year for more than a decade. Without proper care during installation, it likely won’t last nearly as long as intended.
