Here it is, the middle of winter, and no matter where you set the thermostat on your furnace, you just can’t seem to get your home warm enough. While most times it is going to take a call to your heating repair company, there are a few steps to take before you make that call. It is important to also know when you really should call them right at the start.
- It may sound silly, but check your thermostat. Sometimes people get confused about the temperature and just how the home will feel at a particular setting. Oddly, the human body cannot fathom keeping the house at 80 degrees during the summer, but may be uncomfortable at a setting below that in the winter. Just because you want your home to be 70 in the summer doesn’t mean you will feel warm at that setting in the winter. Try raising the temperature setting a couple of degrees to see if you feel warmer. And while you’re at it, make sure it is actually turned on – again, this may sound silly, but other family members may have inadvertently shut it off or switched it to cooling instead of heating in an attempt to increase the temperature. Some units also need a battery to operate correctly, so if it has been awhile, you should change it.
- Check your fuses, circuit breakers, and/or gas lines to be sure they haven’t shut off or become compromised in any way. If this has happened, you may still want to make a heating service call because this shouldn’t happen if a system is working correctly and there are no wiring issues.
- Change the filter – a blocked filter can keep the heating unit from operating efficiently, making it unable to heat the home properly.
- Check exhaust and intake vents to be sure they are not blocked.
