About Our Founder, Zeke Acosta
Ezequiel “Zeke” Acosta emigrated from Cuba at 12, arriving in the U.S. the day before the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. His family initially settled in New Jersey, where he began learning HVAC skills by joining a neighbor on service calls. After relocating to Charlotte, NC, Zeke completed an HVAC associate degree at Central Piedmont Community College in 1967.
At just 22, he launched Acosta Heating, Cooling & Electrical from his parents’ home, turning their garage into a workshop. Word of mouth and industry contacts fueled early growth, leading to the company’s first location on Tryon Street in 1974 with three employees. By 1991, Acosta expanded to 12 employees and two adjacent buildings. With 26 employees and 18 service vehicles, the company built a 20,000-square-foot facility on Stuart Andrew Boulevard in 2001, where it operates today.
The Next Generation: Lauren Acosta Huckleberry
In 2019, Zeke Acosta’s daughter, Lauren Acosta Huckleberry, stepped into the role of president at Acosta Heating, Cooling & Electrical as Zeke retired. Lauren’s journey to leadership began over a decade ago, laying the groundwork for the company’s continued growth.
Before joining Acosta, Lauren spent six years at Vector Marketing, where she gained experience in sales, training, and recruitment. In 2008, Zeke invited her to join the family business, but only after she completed HVAC courses at the local community college. Starting as an HVAC salesperson, Lauren dedicated six years to sales, working through two pregnancies—right up until she could no longer fit in crawl spaces!
Under Lauren’s leadership, Acosta has grown from a $5 million to a $10 million business, expanding the team to over 50 people and establishing an electrical division to broaden service offerings.
Community Involvement
Zeke Acosta has been committed to sharing his HVAC expertise with the community, serving on boards and committees, including the Board of Directors for the Southern Piedmont BBB. He has also taught service classes for General Electric and Trane Central Air Conditioning in Charlotte, NC, Miami, FL, and Reynosa, Mexico.
Acosta Heating, Cooling & Electrical actively gives back through partnerships and community programs. In collaboration with the Charlotte Knights baseball team, the company hosts giveaways at every game. They also contribute to Habitat for Humanity’s Critical Repair Division and participate in the annual Heat for the Holidays initiative, installing furnaces at no cost for families in need.
